Itsy Made To Order... "Ouh No! Our Cake Cracked..." (Frozen Cake)

Hey there! Hope that it is still not too late to wish all of you 'Happy Aidiladha'.

This is our first post on 'Itsy Made To Order' and you are going on a different ride today compared to usual 'The Itsy Story'. In 'Itsy Made To Order' we will share with you some of our experience in getting our orders done.

We started to get back into baking and decorating in May earlier this year. So, in order to get the mood going on, we decided to make a cake for our sister's engagement. The event was on 20th May 2016. While we were decorating that cake on the day before, taking our own sweet time, suddenly 'itsyhubby' gave us a call from work.

"Hey, what are you doing dear?" and we was like, what question is this?he knew from the very beginning that today we are going to be busy making a cake for the engagement event tomorrow and we calmly answer, "I am doing the cake now. Why? Anything dear?" then, "Hmm, ok...by the way, my friend here asked me to check with you whether can he order a frozen themed cake for his daughter's birthday?" he said and we were like, ok...is he serious?like now? But, being professional,we replied, "Ok, when would he like to have it?". Well, you wouldn't believe what is going to be the answer. The answer is, "Tomorrow, after work." said itsyhubby and we was like, hey tomorrow is the sister's engagement event. So, again being 'professional' we replied calmly, "Hmm, we will see. I can't promise now, I will confirm it with you later tonight whether we can make it or not."

Later that  day, at night, out of guilt since the request is from a dear friend of 'itsyhubby', we agreed to make a frozen themed cake for the daughter. The friend did not have any particular request in design wise as long as it is frozen themed (blue and white, snow, snowflakes...snowflakes and snowflakes). So, we made a very simple frozen themed cake (please be informed that no Elsa or Anna involved due to time limitation). And the outcome:

P/S: our 'olaf' is not as nice to see as it looks in the picture
(our fist time in making fondant figurine cake topper)
This is actually one of our early creations since we started back in May this year. At this time, we did not know how to fully cover a cake with fondant in a proper way. As a result of that, which was not a good one, while on our way to deliver the cake with itsyhubby, due to speed bumps, the cake actually cracked at the number '4' area and to top that, as we drive, the number '4' seems like it has been ripped from the cake but luckily have yet to fully fall off. As we are still a beginner, we are at no way of knowing what to do. On top of that, you know what, both itsyhubby and I got into an argument on whose fault it was. I was blaming itsyhubby saying that he did not drive carefully and him on the other hand blaming me saying that I did not cover the cake with fondant properly.

After doing some research and more fondant cakes involved. We discovered that the cake was indeed not covered properly. Well, it is me to blame here. Even at this point, we still can't get a 'perfect' fully fondant covered cake for our creations. But hey, we believe in 'practice makes perfect'. So, perhaps a few years from now, or even months, we could together come back to this moment and make comparison on how far our practices have taken us.

From this experience we definitely learn that, doesn't matter how much we read on and watch tutorials, it will only provide us knowledge and ideas and we will only capture the skills by doing it ourselves (trust us, the list of tutorials that we have read or watched is definitely a very long list, from 'My Cupcake Addiction''CakeStyle', to 'How To Cake It' just to mention some and many more. But, we are still not a master). So, we are calling all the beginner bakers like us out there to join us and "Lets Do It".

If you are planning to be a baker or cake decorator, do subscribe to their You Tube channel if you haven't (click the link above). We gotta start somewhere right? So, start by grabbing as much knowledge and ideas as possible before you finally 'Do It'. They are very inspirational. I can watch them every single night before going to bed.

We gotta go now, see ya in the next 'Itsy Made To Order' or perhaps 'The Itsy Story".

xoxo,

itsycupcakebygugulicious
